Successful End to a Great Season
The Beyer Band & Color Guard finished their 2008 season in style yesterday, giving a performance that overflowed with emotion and energy. Nearly everyone agreed it was the best performance of the season. Beyer took home the award for Best General Effect, and placed 3rd in the Grand Championship for A/AA/AAA, earning the bronze medal. They also placed first in Music Ensemble and GE Music, which recognizes the great deal of effort all of our musicians put into perfecting their craft this year. The Beyer program received many high compliments from other Directors, staff members, WBA volunteers, and judges. Congratulations to all the students, parents, and staff! Also, congratulations to our competitor Aliso Niguel High School for winning the Grand Championship, and to our friends at Clovis East High School for their outstanding season and silver medal finish.
Class AAA Champions
Last night at CSU East Bay, the Beyer Band & Color Guard took their season to new heights with a strong performance that rose above the frigid weather, earning them the title once again of Western Band Association Class AAA Champions. Beyer also took home awards for Best General Effect (in a tie with Aliso Niguel High School), Best Percussion, and Best Visual. By far the largest event of the season, the Championship event featured 45 bands in class A, AA, and AAA combined. Because of winning first place in their division, Beyer will perform today at the end of the A/AA/AAA Grand Championships at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill. Their performance time is 1:02. Band & Guard Give Stellar Performance in Madera
On a beautiful night in Madera, the Marching Band and Color Guard gave their strongest performance of the year by far, thrilling the enthusiastic audience and pleasing the judges, who awarded them Sweepstakes in class A/AA/AAA. Beyer also earned high Music, General Effect, and Visual, and the percussion and color guard missed first place by ultra-slim margins once again. Scores and full results of the competition are available here. The band will spend the coming week further refining their show in preparation for the WBA Championships in Hayward & Pleasant Hill next weekend.
Beyer Squeezes A Victory in Clovis
With the competition hot on the heels of the Beyer Marching Band & Color Guard Saturday at Clovis, Beyer once again managed to take home the sweepstakes award. Earning their highest score yet this year and the highest in their division in California, Beyer was also awarded caption trophies for Best General Effect and Visual. Color Guard and Percussion both placed a close 2nd to Clovis East High School. Next weekend will be the last show before Championships, held in Madera, CA. Information about the Madera show can be found here. Congratulations to the band and guard for another great performance! Thanks also to the parent chaperones, drivers, and food volunteers who spent another long day with us!
Beyer Takes Sweepstakes at MIV
The Band and Color Guard showed remarkable consistency last night, once again making huge strides forward in their performance quality. The third competition of the year, the Modesto Invitational (MIV), was by far the group's best performance yet, and again earned them a sweepstakes trophy as well as caption awards for best Color Guard, Percussion, Visual, and General Effect. They missed the Music caption award by only a 0.5 margin! You can see the full results of the competion here. Beyer will resume rehearsal this Tuesday to continue progress on the show, but will have next weekend off (Happy Halloween!). The next competition will be at Buchanan High School in Clovis on November 8th.

Beyer Earns Top Honors at Fresno State Show
The second show of the year for Beyer was a tremendous competitive success. The performance at the annual Sierra Cup Classic, hosted by Fresno State University, was much stronger than the week before in Merced, and the competition much tougher. Strong bands like Clovis East and Ridgeview who will surely be tough competition for Beyer throughout the rest of the season weren't quite a match for the stellar performance that the students put on. The band earned sweepstakes, and caption awards for best general effect, visual, music, and percussion. Congratulations to all the students, and thank you once again to the parents and staff who made it possible. This weekend Beyer will co-host the MIV invitational at Johansen High School. Come out and show your support for our local show!
Decal Blitz Tomorrow
Wednesday evening, October 22nd from 5-8pm will be our first Decal Blitz of the Fall. Students go out in groups door to door and sell Beyer Band & Guard decals to make money for the program. Let's make this a great fundraiser! We need drivers, so please contact Sue Taylor if you are available!
Beyer Takes Sweepstakes at Merced
The marching band and color guard started the Fall competition season in excellent fashion last night, taking the A/AA/AAA sweepstakes award along with all captions: general effect, percussion, color guard, music, and visual. Director Blair Williams and the staff were pleased with the performance, but the students know that much work remains to be done on the show. Rehearsals will resume this week starting Tuesday night at Johansen as Beyer looks to polish their music, marching, and choreography in time for the Fresno State Competition on Saturday, October 18th. Thanks to all the parents and supporters who made the trip to Merced to cheer on the performers!
A Huge Thank You
Mr. Williams and the Beyer staff would like to thank all of the students for a hugely successful weekend of rehearsal. The show saw tremendous improvement over the 2 day "camp" because of the hard work of the dedicated students, and we are much closer to being finished and ready for the first competition. Also, we couldn't have done it without the amazing support of the Beyer Booster parents and the Blue Crew! Thank you to everyone for making the weekend special, and continuing to be a part of our great Beyer tradition!
Oct 4th 9-5 Only
Because of the Calaveras Weekend being cancelled, we were trying to find a stadium for the evening of October 4th to do a uniform dress rehearsal. However, we were unable to find a suitable location. Practice will only be 9-12:30, 1:30-5 on Saturday the 4th. Please mark your calendars appropriately! If you have any questions about the upcoming schedule, check our calendar which is always updated, or call the band office at 576-4354.
Calaveras Weekend "Out"; Rehearsal at Beyer "In"
Due to circumstances beyond our control, the stadium at Calaveras High School was made unavailable to us for the weekend of our annual band camp. The tremendous effort and amount of money involved in getting the band up to San Andreas for the weekend is simply not justified if we don't have a stadium for rehearsal, therefore Mr. Williams and the staff have decided to cancel. Instead, we will be holding rehearsals at Beyer on Friday night and Saturday all day. The Saturday schedule will be our normal 9-9 breakdown: 9-12:30, 1:30-5, and 6:30-9. The annual talent show for the students will still be held after rehearsal Saturday in the little theater at Beyer. In addition, the Beyer Band Boosters will serve a spaghetti dinner to students and staff on Saturday at dinner break (5:00-6:30), and after rehearsal there will be nachos and ice cream served to students, staff, and family before the talent show. We want to do everything we can to make it a successful, productive, and special weekend, so come out to support the band and color guard Saturday night as they put together more of their show and work toward completing it for the first competition on October 11th at Merced. If you have any questions, please contact us.
Calaveras Weekend Camp
Mark your calendars for the upcoming annual weekend camp, returning this year to Calaveras High School in San Andreas, CA. Held September 19-21st, the camp will be a chance for the Beyer Band and Color Guard members and staff to work on completing their show at a great facility. Band and guard members will leave on the bus Friday after school, and return early in the evening on Sunday. On Saturday night September 20th, the group will perform in uniform for parents, friends, and supporters in the Calaveras High School stadium. The performance will be at approximately 7:30 P.M. Come out to support in whatever way you can. The Blue Crew is still looking for help in the many things that need to be done behind the scenes for the weekend to be successful. Contact Bruce Tidrick to volunteer. An itinerary for the weekend will be posted shortly.
Beyer Welcomes New Director
The Beyer Marching Band and Color Guard program would like to extend a warm welcome to their new Director of Bands, Blair Williams. Mr. Williams has been actively involved in the Modesto City Schools for the past several years as a percussion instructor, Student Teacher, and Interim Band Director. Hired just shortly before the annual Band Camp last week, he just finished leading the band students and staff through a very successful week where the band and color guard learned the first 2 minutes of their show, "A Moment". Last night, the band and guard also performed in their annual Welcome Back Barbecue Premier Performance to scores of supporters including alumni, friends, and familes. The performance was a chance for the band to show off their work and for Mr. Williams to officially introduce himself. The Beyer program is looking forward to continued success and promoting the growth of the program under the leadership of Mr. Williams.
Congratulations DCI Participants
The Beyer family would like to offer a special congratulations to the many Beyer alumni and staff who participated in the Drum Corps International World Championships this past week in Bloomington, Indiana. Trumpet player Tyler Halderman (class of 2008) performed with the Open Class Champion Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets, and Beyer staff members Shekhar Khedekar and Nate Bourg were a part of the percussion staff. Beyer Set to Capture "A Moment"
The Beyer Marching Band and Color Guard is pleased to announce their 2008 Fall program, "A Moment". Set to the stunning and beautiful music of an original commisioned piece by Dr. Gary Gilroy, the program will explore the breathtaking moments in life when sound and movement converge and become greater than their sum, as well as the rare but striking moments when both sound and movement stop, leaving us to interpret the experience in myriad ways. The percussion book will once again be written by Shekhar Khedekar (battery) and Nate Bourg (front ensemble), and long-time Beyer staff member Oliver Bullock will again head the visual design. New staff member Eddie Castro will be the choreographer for the Color Guard. Stay tuned for sneak previews of the band's performances as they put together the show in the next 2 months.
